Canada’s Design Museum Launches Emerging Designer Competition
The Design Exchange Sources Internationally Celebrated Talent to Vet the Next Generation of Designers

TORONTO, Canada – March 26, 2013 – The Design Exchange (DX), Canada’s Design Museum, is proud to partner with the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) Foundation to launch the unprecedented Emerging Designer Competition. This national initiative seeks to provide a platform for up-and-coming Canadian designers representing all design disciplines to achieve recognition and exposure, while showcasing Canada’s diverse talent. Seeking to award creativity with international legs, the museum has developed a two tier judging process. Five local design minds – Omer Arbel, Sunny Fong, Patty Johnson, Philippe Meunier, and John Tong – will evaluate initial entries ahead of three global heavyweights: Marcel Wanders, Douglas Coupland and Heather Reisman.

Shauna Levy, President of the DX, is known for connecting design expertise and emerging talent, and for sharing this fusion of creativity with the public.

“This competition occupies a special place for the DX, as it provides a platform for design in general, and the next Canadian design star, in particular, to be celebrated in the same way that other creative disciplines are – be it art or writing. It is time for us as a society to take design seriously, from both commercial and cultural perspectives. We are proud to partner with the RBC Foundation to support Canadian ingenuity, by linking the up-and-comers with celebrated mentors,” explains Levy.

Leading interdisciplinary design studio, Bruce Mau Design, has joined the initiative as the creative partner, branding all competition materials. This is the first DX brand project by the internationally celebrated design firm within their role as the DX agency of record.

THE AWARD
Fashion Design. Graphic Design. Industrial Design. Product Design. Digital Design. Interactive Design. Calling all Canadian designers with an absolute maximum of five years of professional experience in their respective industries, the competition asks entries to submit their best work through a digital portfolio by September 30, 2013, supported by their CV, references and a creative video, outlining what the opportunity means to them professionally.”
